Areas of Expertise
After graduating from 天美影院with a master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, I focused my practice in the community of Laredo, Texas. My experience with the multicultural and diverse population of Laredo led me to seek opportunities to promote clinical opportunities in the area of communication sciences and disorders relative to cultural and linguistic diversity.
I have 36 years of practice as a Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist. My clinical experience includes both pediatric and geriatric populations in all settings including schools, hospitals, rehab centers, skilled living facilities and university clinics. I have presented research at the local, state, national and international levels.
I am currently a Clinical Assistant Professor position at Our Lady of the Lake University. The focus of my scholarship is advocating for culturally and linguistic diverse populations, fostering cultural competence, addressing health and educational inequities, international service-learning and linking academic knowledge to clinical practice in the CSD student.
Teaching Philosophy
At its core, I believe higher education is about going beyond content mastery. I strive to create a learning environment that fosters my commitment to the pursuit of excellence, integrity, community and service. My clinical supervision philosophy combines academic learning and active engagement. My goal is to encourage the development of an authentic faculty and student relationship based on true dialogue. I encourage students to become self-directed learners, engaging their natural curiosity about clinical practice and taking that curiosity to the next level. By engaging the student to think about the world beyond the classroom, I challenge the students to engage in living purposeful lives as they prepare for the service of humanity in real world clinical practice.
Outside Interests
Outside of the university I like to serve as a mentor both professionally and personally. I mentor as a Big Sister for the S.A. Big Brother/Big Sister program as well as for the American Speech Hearing Association. I serve at San Fernando Cathedral and I am on the board for the San Antonio Speech Hearing and Language Association.
My research allows me to collaborate with collegues outside of the university where
I participate with service learning projects internationally.
