Areas of Expertise
I possess a broad range of teaching and practical experience in the academic fields
of Business Administration, Management, Economics, Business Law, Human Resource Management,
Criminal Justice, Policing, Criminal and Civil Law, Constitutional Rights, Political
Science, Military History, and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Teaching Philosophy
Throughout my career, I have remained dedicated to a liberal education for all students.
The 2002 report, 鈥淕reater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes
to College鈥 reflects many of the educational philosophies that I have tried to model
both as an educator and as an administrator. For example, I have encouraged my students
to become 鈥渋ntentional learners鈥 who are flexible and able to adapt to new environments,
who are able to coalesce information from various sources, and who engage in lifelong
learning. Furthermore, I believe that the promotion of a 鈥減ractical liberal education,鈥
blending the cognitive aspects of education (e.g., thinking) with the behavioral (e.g.,
getting a job), is crucial for student success upon graduation. Students who are taught
to think, rather than taught to memorize material have developed a skill that allows
them flexibility in obtaining employment or successfully completing graduate or professional
education.
Outside Interests
Besides traveling, attending sporting events, family time, and personal fitness, I
enjoy spending my time away from the university serving Texans in the Texas State
Guard. I'm prior service U.S. Army and now serve the Texas Military Department in
the TXSG Training Center as an Officer in Charge of Search and Rescue Training.
