Areas of Expertise
As a bilingual family therapist, I have worked with individuals, families, and couples with a diverse range of cultural understandings and experiences. I also specialize in medical family therapy, in which I incorporate relational hypnosis in the treatment of fears, phobias, chronic pain, and other concerns. Trained as a brief therapist, my theoretical orientation is grounded in strengths-based and systemic concepts. My research interests include systemic approaches, clinical hypnosis, single-session therapy, supervision and training, multicultural therapy, and qualitative research. I am also the program director of the MS in Psychology with a Concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy and the certificate director of Psychological Services for Spanish Speaking Populations.
Teaching Philosophy
I strive to create a safe and welcoming classroom environment where students are encouraged to openly share their ideas without the fear of judgment. While I endeavor to create an ambiance where students can share their ideas freely, I also address the importance of remaining respectful of cultural and gender differences.
I believe that students benefit from taking a learning and open stance during interactions with others. In my classes, I provide students with the opportunity to engage in both group and class discussions. I encourage them to be mindful of their communication and to approach each conversation as an opportunity to grow or to learn something that could useful moving forward.
Outside Interests
I enjoy learning about nutrition and health. I also enjoy exercising and recreational activities such as working out at the gym and playing outdoor sports. I have been practicing yoga for over seven years and mostly enjoy this mindfulness practice during sunsets at the beach. I also dedicate my time to environmental community cleanups on a regular basis.
