Curriculum Vitae

Areas of Expertise

I received a doctorate in Physical Chemistry from Iowa State University; however, my current research efforts are in the fields of chemical education and analytical instrumental analyses of commercial products and the environment. In the field of chemical education, together with my students, I have published six articles in the Journal of Chemical Education. Our research efforts outside of education require the use of analytical instrumentation such as GC, HPLC, and various spectroscopic tools to investigate the chemistry of commercial products and local soils and waters. In total these efforts have led to over 100 undergraduate student research presentations at regional and national meetings of the American Chemical Society.

Teaching Philosophy

An effective learning environment is one that is sustained where appropriate foundation exists and possesses attention to deficiencies with a clear understanding of objectives to be reached. Second, an effective learning environment is an active one as opposed to a passive one. Such an environment should engage students in both mind and body and have them 鈥渄oing chemistry鈥 for example instead of entirely watching. And third, the enviroment must have a dependence on trust. An effective learning environment creates opportunities for students to accept ideas from other students while taking ownership of their own ideas. Effective instruction does not seem likely to occur without lots of hard work, commitment, fairness, respect, and the reciprocation of trust.

Outside Interests

I very much enjoy any activity that occurs outdoors with friends. Tennis, disc golf, fishing, kayaking, day hikes, and roller coasters to name a few of the things I find to be a lot of fun outside of the classroom. While not quite proficient at any sport, I enjoy competition. Highlights with friends and family include kayaking the hill country rivers and hiking across the Grand Canyon four times.

Teaching Excellence BadgeThe Rating System for Teaching Excellence is a faculty evaluation tool focusing on teaching strengths and a commitment to continuous improvement. It assesses instructors based on four key criteria, each rated on a scale of 1-5 stars. These criteria include the clarity of instruction, organization of course material, ability to engage students, and availability and helpfulness outside of class. Instructors are evaluated on their clarity in explaining concepts, the organization of course materials, their ability to engage and involve students, and their accessibility and responsiveness outside of class. This system helps showcase and recognize exceptional teaching while promoting ongoing enhancement of teaching skills.
